The first school of nursing in the Sindhudurg and also the neighbouring Ratnagiri districts, SoN is in its 12th year and in that time has gained recognition as a specialized institution. The School presently offers two major academic programs in Nursing, namely:

• General Nursing and Midwifery Diploma Course
• Post Basic B. Sc. course

While the Maharashtra Nursing Council (MNC) and the Indian Nursing Council (INC) recognize the Diploma Course, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) recognizes the Degree Course. The curriculum is based on MNC and INC syllabus and regulations and the medium of instruction is Marathi and English. Every year SoN admits 20 students for its full-time residential 3 1/2 year GNM course. Presently, SoN is serving students from Sindhudurg and the neighbouring Ratnagiri district. Students who have passed the 12th Std (Science) examination securing 50% marks are eligible for admission to both the courses. Till today, the SoN results have been 100% and over 200 students have received the GNM Diploma from SoN, and have been gainfully employed in major private as well as government hospitals in Kolhapur, Pune, Mumbai, Goa and Karnataka.

SoN is launching the Post Basic B.Sc. Course from this academic year. It will admit 30 students for this two-year course, which is offered to students, who have already completed their GNM Diploma. The admission is open to students from all over Maharashtra.

Students receive their clinical expeience at the following hospitals:

• The Civil Hospital, Oros, Sindhudurgs
• The Rural Hospital, Kudal
• The Cottage Hospital, Sawantwadi
• The Regional Mental Hospital, Ratnagiri
• The Primary Health Centres in Kudal & Sawantwadi
• Urban Community Health centres attached to the District Hospital
• Rural Community Health Centre (Primary Healthcare Cantre)

Faculty members accompany students on hospital visits to ensure that the students learn well and the best possible care is rendered to the patients. SoN arranges lectures of expert doctors for the upgradation of its students. SoN also organizes social Camps, operation camps, health check-ups & vaccination camps, which has a twin objective- on job exposure to its trainees and free treatment to the rural people. Once a year, SoN organizes educational and exposure tours to Goa, Mumbai, Ratnagiri or Kolhapur. Paying visits to the Homes for Aged, Orphanages, Beggars’Homes as well as Rehabilitation Centers for clinical experience is compulsory.

SoN’s campus at village Anav, is sprawled over 3 acres and reflects a certain dignity and grandeur with its red brick walls and a village style slanting roof. Eager to lend a helping hand to the good cause, a few local farmers donated their land to house the SoN building. To express its gratitute towards this kind gesture, MSVS felicitated these farmers at a function held in Mumbai.

The SoN premises houses class rooms, laboratories, demonstration rooms, mess, and also a library. The institute always strives to provide the latest and best collection of books, journals, online sources, dissertations, etc. to the students for course work and research.

In order to facilitate the conservation of energy, MSVS embraced Maharashtra Energy Development Agency’s wind and solar energy projects. While the solar energy helps in pumping and heating water, and also lighting students’home, the wind mill that has been installed illuminates the campus during the night. These innovative projects are first of their kind in any institute in Sindhudurg. SoN has its own bus-service, which transports students to these hospitals and back .

Sindhudurg district did not have satisfactory educational facilities in the health area. Students had to go to Mumbai, Pune or Kolhapur to study medicine and allied health sciences. Subsequently, the establishment of Ayurvedic Medical College at Sawantwadi & Homoeopathic Medical College at Vengurle mitigated students’ woes to a certain extent. However, Sindhudurg still did not have a Nursing School. In order to provide better educational opportunities to women of the district, who form more than 50% of its population, and also to empower them, MSVS played a pioneering role in launching the coveted nursing project in this area. The district was wanting in trained nurses and the venture of the MSVS paved the way for the solution of this problem. It provided a great opportunity especially to those economically backward students, who would not have been able to travel to the far off destinations for sheer economic reasons.

MUHS, Maharashtra Government and INC has granted SoN permission to start the Post Basic B.Sc Course, from the current academic yea. Plans are afoot to construct about 60,000 sq. ft of premises to house the teaching block and the hostel for the new courses. Construction of a 3500 Sq. Ft. seminar hall to conduct national and international seminars and an equally big library is also on the cards.
